The Civilian Joint Task Force, a group of youth volunteers that has been at the fore front of battle against insurgency in Borno State, on Sunday came out to vouch for their leader, Baba Lawan Jafar, saying he has no link with Boko Haram and was at no time arrested by the military for alleged relationship with the terrorist group.
A Kaduna-based weekly had reported that Jafar was arrested by the military
for his relationship with Boko Haram and was released after the Borno State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Kaka Shehu Lawan, pressurized that the case against him should be dropped.
But speaking at a press conference where he led leaders and several members of the CJTF before, the legal adviser of the vigilance group, Barrister Jubrin Gunda, said this was not the first time the group would be facing similar attack.
He said, “When you are fighting evil, definitely evil would rise back to fight you but one thing is certain darkness cannot win the battle against light.”
Gunda who did not rule out political motives for the “reported falsehood”, said as a legal adviser of the group he had taken legal action several times against the detractors of Civilian JTF.
The legal adviser gave the Kaduna-based publication three days to either produce proof of its report or retract the report and tender an apology, adding that failure to do that will leave the CJTF with no option than to seek legal redress.
He said, “To put the record straight, there was not a time when the CJTF leader was arrested and released at the instance of the State Attorney General, Barrister Kaka Shehu Lawan.
“Moreso, the CJTF leader is not under arrest either by the military or any of the security agencies in the state.”
