A 25-year-old man, Haruna Musa, was on Wednesday sentenced to two years imprisonment by a Federal High Court, Abuja, for possession of cannabis sativa, popularly called Indian hemp.

Musa admitted before Justice B. O. Quadri, who convicted him, that he has been smoking weed for the past
15 years.

The convict who used to be a fruit seller, however, pleaded with the court to temper Justice with mercy, saying he has three children and an aged parent.

Quadri sentenced Musa after he pleaded guilty to the charge levelled against him.

He said based on the confessional statement of the defendant and his admission in the court, the convict is hereby found guilty as charged.

“Though the convict is a first time offender who seems remorseful, however he must be punished to serve as deterrent to others."

“The convict is hereby sentence to two years imprisonment with hard labour and without an option of fine,” he said.
The convict, according to the NDLEA prosecutor, Mr Mike Kassa, was arrested at the Fruit Market Zuba, Abuja, on May 12, 2016 with 5kilogrammes of cannabis sativa.

The offence was contrary to and punishable under Section 19 of the NDLEA Act cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
